The former CEO of FTX was in a Nassau court on Monday where he was expected to agree to be extradited to the US to face criminal charges. He told the court last week that he wasn't going to waive his right to challenge his deportation.
Jerone Roberts, Bankman-Fried's lawyer in the Bahamas, said he wasn't aware of the plan to extradite his client.
The New York Times reported that Roberts requested a break to confer with Bankman-Fried privately after seeing his client in court.
The judge said that he couldn't take action without Bankman-Fried's consent, so he was sent back to Fox Hill. The FBI and the US Department of State were at the hearing.
According to Roberts, the former CEO agreed to be extradited. He said that Bankman-Fried agreed to be extradited because he had broken the law.
The court official told Bankman- Fried to stand up straight. He was reported to be sitting slumped in his seat with his head down and shaking his leg.
Bankman- Fried had his sleeves rolled up when he was asked to stand in court. He had his hands out of his pockets.
Jacob Gallagher of The Wall Street Journal said that Bankman- Fried embodied Silicon Valley's disheveled-exec trope better than anyone. He wears cargo shorts and baggy T-shirts with FTX's logo and was recently caught playing a video game during an interview.
"He branded himself as a slob, and it makes him more authentic and people like it more," Michael Pachter said.
Bankman-Fried is accused of misappropriating customer funds, including using them to make political contributions, buy real estate, and repay loans. Bankman- Fried was accused of fraud. There is a maximum sentence of 115 years in prison for the charges.
Bankman- Fried denied committing fraud in multiple interviews before his arrest.
