Rapid reaction

1. Man United avoid slipup as World Cup stars deliver upon return

It was a complicated tie that United were expected to win.

They returned from the World Cup break on December 11th, just a day after the quarter-finals. Despite some good moments, it wasn't enough to bridge the gap in quality.

United haven't won a trophy in over a year, and Ten Hag wants to win something in his first season at Old United, so he picked three players who were in the World Cup. Portugal and England knocked out the two players 11 days ago.

Victor Lindelof, Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay are not World Cup players, but Ten Hag's decision to include them in his team paid off.

In the build up to the goal, Fernandes clipped a pass to Wan-Bissaka at the back post. It would have been tempting for Ten Hag to pick a player who wasn't in the squad, but he chose to bring him back early.

2. Onus on Rashford to continue goal-scoring form

He scored three goals in the World Cup and is probably right to wonder why he was only given five minutes.

He got another here after picking up the ball in his own half and shooting low past Bailey Peacock- Farrell and into the far corner. In the second half of the season, Ten Hag will need him to keep doing the type of goal he did in the first half.

It could leave United short of goals as they chase a trophy and a place in the top four. If no one shows up in January, the responsibility in front of goal will fall on Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

The 25-year-old has nine goals this season, almost double his tally from last year, but Ten Hag needs him to match the 43 goals he scored in two campaigns.

3. Burnley's priority remains Premier League promotion

Three years ago, Burnley beat Manchester United 2-0 in the premier league, but Kompany won't be too upset to have exited the cup. The former Manchester City defender said before the game that he wanted to measure himself against some of the best, but in reality his job this season is to getBurnley out of the Championship and back in the top flight.

He's done a good job since taking over at Turf Moor and his side are three points clear at the top of the table. Even if it's not quite as glamorous, a cup run is always good for a team and their fans, even if it's not quite as exciting.

After the World Cup, there was a chance that his in-form team could have caused a shock against a rusty United, but he won't be too worried. It's more important that they play in the league next year. The priority is promotion

"Rashford was a constant threat, playing on the back line, on the back four." He is so dangerous with his dribbles and his movement without the ball. He runs fast and hard.
