You're planning to fly during the holidays, but not sure what's in your carry-on bag. Is it possible to bring all your gifts in your luggage? Is it possible to bring holiday food on the plane?

Don't worry, AskTSA is here. Travelers can find answers to their travel packing questions with the new text-based option from the transportation security administration.

Its social media accounts and webpage are also included.

Text TRAVEL to 275872. There are experts on hand from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. It's time to est. During these hours, we did see some extended answers.

The interface requires users to choose one of the topics to start.

We tried the "What's Allowed" section to find some packing help for the holidays.

There's a lot of information on the 3-1-1 rule.

The next question was "Carryon" or "Checked" luggage, and then we were presented with topics such as e cigarettes, electronics, firearms, Flammable Aerosols, food, grooming items, Knives, Lighters and more.

We tried to find packing tips for popular items.

Sports equipment

A senior cruise writer who is about to embark on a multistop trip with ice skates and fishing gear checked in with AskTSA.

It took several minutes for me to hear back about the skates, which was also a time lag. The message might not have been received if you were looking at your phone.

ASKTSA

When she searched online, she found the information she was looking for.

It took 13 hours for her to get a response. It looked like it was sent by a person rather than a bot.

Gifts

I asked if I could bring wrapped gifts through security.

This is a difficult thing to do. I've personally seen an agent unwrap a tightly secured set of candlesticks from Tiffany's, watching as layer after layer of bubble wrap was removed while the passenger in front of me became more and more upset.

I bring gift bags and tissue paper for quick gift giving. I haven't seen this again.

ASKTSA

They recommend waiting. Travelers are likely to be confused by this directive.

Food

Readers want to know what food can be brought through security. I hadn't thought of it yet, but Clint Henderson sent a query to the Transportation Security Administration asking if I could bring frozen turkey on a plane.

ASKTSA

It's good news for Clint that he can bring his frozen turkey on the plane, but they need to stay in a solid state for screening to qualify.

The newsletter editor reached out to AskTSA with more questions.

ASKTSA

One of the two categories (along with "solid") offered up for food questions was "creamy".

She was told that a social care specialist would be in touch between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. when she replied "No" to her question.

ASKTSA

While this answer was helpful, we were able to type in "pie" and get an answer immediately.

Bottom line

If you want a personal answer on an item that you're not sure how to categorize, the AskTSA text message option is a useful tool.
