Donald Trump was referred to the Justice Department for prosecution over the Capitol riot.

Everyone in the nation knows who is to blame for that day. McConnell told CNN that he had no immediate observations beyond that.

The House panel asked the Justice Department to prosecute Trump on four charges. Conspiracy to defraud the US, conspiracy to make false statements, and inciting an insurrection were included.

The Justice Department can decide if they want to charge Trump after this referral.

Two years ago, McConnell blamed Trump for the riot in the Senate. McConnell rebuked the former president for his "disgraceful dereliction of duty" even though he voted to acquit Trump in his second impeachment trial.

McConnell said that Trump was morally responsible for provoking the events of the day. The people that invaded this building believed they were following their president's orders.

The Capitol was attacked in his name. McConnell said that the criminals were carrying his banners and hanging his flags.

McConnell has had a long-standing feud with Trump

McConnell and the former president have been at odds for a long time.

In November of 2021, Trump called McConnell and other Republicans "RINOs", an acronym for Republicans In Name Only. He gave McConnell the nickname "Old Crow" and accused him ofjeopardizing other Republicans' reelection chances.

McConnell brushed off rumors that Trump would try to oust him as Senate GOP leader. Trump called McConnell aloser after he defended Rounds. Trump had claimed that he had voter fraud.

The target of Trump's ire again was McConnell and his wife Elaine. The change in the way electoral votes are counted was supported by McConnell in September.

Trump accused McConnell of opposing him because he has a "death wish" and called McConnell's wife a "China loving wife".

McConnell trolled Trump by giving out bottles of Old Crow Bourbon to GOP senators during a luncheon in his home state.

McConnell did not respond to Trump's insult about his spouse.
