The 1976 United States women's Olympic basketball team was included in the long list of potential recipients.

They were some of the best players of their era. Each of them led their teams to NBA titles.

Wade was named NBA Finals Most Valuable Player in 2006 while he was a member of the Miami Heat. The US Olympic men's basketball team won the gold medal in 2008.

The Dallas Mavericks won the NBA title in 2011 with the help of Dirk Nowitzki. He was the first European-born player to win the NBA's Most Valuable Player award. He had 31,560 points in his NBA career.

Gasol burst onto the scene when he was named 2002 NBA rookies of the year, but his best years were spent with the Los Angeles Lakers. While playing with Kobe Bryant, the six-time All-Star won two NBA titles. While playing for Spain, he was an acclaimed international player.

Popovich was the coach of the San Antonio Spurs who won five NBA titles. Along with Duncan and Ginbili, he was part of the Big Three and won four titles.

After competing in the first-ever women's Olympic basketball team competition, the U.S. women's national team established a legacy.
