Passan: Correa the 'cherry on top' for stacked Mets (1:12)

After agreeing to a deal with the San Francisco Giants, Carlos Correa pivoted to the New York Mets. There is a time and a place for this.

9:30 AM ET

Carlos Correa is going to the New York Mets instead of the San Francisco Giants.

A week after agreeing to a 13-year, $350 million contract with the Giants, the 28-year-old infielder agreed to a 12-year, $315 million deal with the New York Mets.

How did this happen? There was a disagreement between the Giants and the Astros. Is there anything like this in free agency? Everything you need to know about the shocking switch is here.

What did happen?

The Giants' contract with the star infielder fell apart after the team expressed concerns during the physical examination, prompting him to reopen his free agency and sign with the Mets.

The Mets made a last-ditch effort to sign him before he signed with the Giants. The deal didn't happen at that time. One passed physical from becoming a reality is the most astonishing move of the off-season.

The Mets would become the most expensive team in North American sports history, if this outcome is any indication.

Didn't the Mets spend a lot of money this year? They already have a baseman.

It's definitely true. The Mets signed Francisco Lindor to a 10-year, $341 million deal last year after Steve Cohen traded for him. Team Puerto Rico teammate Francisco Lindor is expected to play third base in New York with his friend and teammate, Carlos Correa.

There was a belief that Steve Cohen could upend the system with his wealth. This surpasses the expectations of the most optimistic Mets fan. The team's payroll will be around $384 million if the deal is done. The Mets would owe an extra $111 million in luxury tax. Their payroll is expected to be close to $500 million. There have been no teams that have come close to $150 million.

The Mets have signed a number of players this off-season, including starting pitchers Justin Verlander and Jose Quintana and outfielder Brandon Nimmo. The Mets' total outlay this winter is more than 800 million dollars.

The two had agreed to terms. What is the meaning of that phrase?

Contract details include years, dollars, performance bonuses, opt-outs, no-trade clauses and other financial levers. A term sheet is sent to a player and they sign it. A player's contract isn't official until he passes a medical examination, which includes an MRI, blood work and other health exams. It's rare, but teams occasionally flag a player's medicals, which can lead to either a new deal or it being scrapped altogether. The latter took place here.

Is it possible that other teams were allowed to talk with him? The Mets could have started changing their minds sooner.

Players can talk with other teams until a deal is done. That kind of thing is frowned upon by everyone. The player doesn't want to suggest to the team that an agreed-upon deal is in jeopardy, and the agent doesn't want to be seen as a bad person if they abandon agreements. The deal with San Francisco was in danger because of the Giants' concerns, so the negotiations with the Mets resumed Tuesday and accelerated quickly.

We don't know what the Giants saw in the physical. The Mets should be worried.

It's not clear what the Giants' concerns are with Correa. With a long and lucrative deal, any team will approach a physical with more rigor.

The Mets have different thresholds for giving a thumbs up on medicals. After the events of the past 24 hours, it's very likely that the Mets will not approve the deal with Correa and he will not sign with them.

This is the first time something like this has ever happened in baseball.

There is nothing of this magnitude.

It's not uncommon for differences of opinions on medical information to be more with draft eligible players. Rocker went to the Mets with the 10th pick of the 2021. The Mets did not offer him a contract despite agreeing on a $6 million deal. Rocker signed for $5.2 million after being taken third by the Rangers.

Grant Balfour is a veteran relief pitcher who signed a two-year, $15 million deal with the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles were seen as having the most difficult to pass medical process in the industry. He signed with the team for two years and 12 million dollars.

Can the Giants do anything?

There isn't much left to do for them. They went after Judge but he re-signed with the Yankees. Only for this to happen, they poached the best free agent.

The Giants have seven starting pitchers, but Nathan Eovaldi is the best free agent left. Michael Conforto, who didn't play last season due to a shoulder injury, is the best left fielder.

Even after signing outfieldersMitch Haniger and Joc Pederson as well as starting pitchers Ross Stripling and Sean Manaea, this is likely to be a lost season for the Giants, who went into the winter hoping to land a franchise player.
