SAS will launch two new trans-Atlantic routes in the year of23. Just a few weeks ago, the airline announced plans to launch a new flight to New York.

SAS adds transatlantic flights from Aalborg & Gothenburg

SAS will change the way they operate their flights next year, as they will only operate flights from the three Nordic countries. SAS will add a new seasonal service from Aalborg to Newark in April of 2020.

SAS will fly 3 times a week from Aalborg to Newark on April 27 of next year.

SK922 Newark to Aalborg departing 11:30PM arriving 1:05PM (+1 day)

The flight is blocked at 8hr 30min in the west and 7hr 35min in the east. On Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, the service will run to Newark.

SAS will fly 3 times a week from GOT to Newark on April 28,23.

Newark to Gothenburg leaves at 6:30PM and arrives at 9:05PM.

The flight is blocked at 8 hours 35 minutes in the west and 7 hours 45 minutes in the east. On Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, the service will run to Newark.

SAS is launching two new routes to Newark

The new routes are described by the SAS executive, Eric Westman.

“As part of SAS’ strategy to strengthen the regional offering in Scandinavia, we are pleased to add intercontinental routes from Gothenburg and Aalborg. We see a demand from secondary cities and are delighted to connect even more parts of the world. The Airbus A321 Long Range is a slightly smaller long-distance aircraft and perfect in size for servicing the regional markets. Having a comfortable way of traveling with fewer stops to exciting cities such as New York, is something we believe will be highly valued by our travelers.”

SAS will use an Airbus A321LR for these routes

Both of these routes will be used by the airline. SAS has three planes in its long haul fleet and no more will be ordered.

There is some demand for the plane, but not enough for a large body. There are a total of 157 seats in the A321LRCs.

  • 22 fully flat business class seats, in a staggered 2-2 and 1-1 configuration
  • 12 premium economy seats, in a 2-2 configuration
  • 123 economy seats, in a 3-3 configuration

There are power outlets at each seat of the A321LRs.

These kinds of routes are a perfect example of what the A321LR can do.

  • These will be the only transatlantic routes for both Aalborg and Gothenburg
  • Aalborg otherwise only has short haul service, entirely within Europe
  • Gothenburg also only otherwise currently has short haul service, though the airport gets a lot more traffic; Qatar Airways used to fly to Gothenburg, though that route isn’t operating at the moment

Bottom line

There will be two new routes from airports that don't offer long haul service in the summer of 2023. The airline will operate 3x weekly flights from Aal Borg to Newark using the A321LRs.

This expansion is what the A321LR were designed for. I want to see if these routes stick around.

SAS has new long haul routes to Newark. Is they going to succeed?
