The Baltimore Ravens made a surprise reunion Tuesday for their banged up and frustrated passing attack.
The Ravens claimed Sammy Watkins off waivers and placed starter Duvernay on injured reserve. The hope is that Watkins will help an offense that hasn't scored a touchdown in seven quarters.
Watkins failed to make a catch in his last three games and was released by the Packers. He had 13 catches for 206 yards and no touchdown in nine games for the Packers this season.
He had a career low in catches and receiving yards in Baltimore last year, so his return was unexpected. At the end of last season, Watkins was near the bottom of the depth chart, which was a big fall for the No. 4 overall pick.
Watkins' second stint in Baltimore begins on a day when Duvernay hobbled off the practice field, outside linebacker Tyus Bowser apologized for a social media post that highlighted a fan's outrage with the offensive coordinators and Pro Bowl tight end Mark Andrews cursed in response to a question about silenced critics
As he walked to the locker room after 30 minutes of practice, Duvernay barely had any weight on his foot. He was third on the Ravens in catches, with 37.
After Duvernay was placed on IR, the Ravens were left with Demarcus Robinson, DeSean Jackson, and James Proche II. The Ravens' wide receiver haven't made a touchdown catch since the third week of the season.
The struggling offense has scored two touchdown in the past three games.
To be honest, I don't give a s---, to be honest. I don't say anything.
People in this building are doing everything they can to win games and put us in the best situation for us. This group is going to be fired up because we have full trust in them. It's too good of a team to take a game off or not play well.
The fan base of the Ravens has become upset with their offensive coach. There were handwritten pieces of paper in front of the team facility that read "Fire Greg Roman" and then they were deleted.
A face-to-face apology was made to Roman on Monday.
"I shouldn't have done that," he said. I have complete respect for him.
Lamar Jackson missed his seventh straight practice on Tuesday, which means backup Tyler Huntley could be making his third start of the season on Saturday against Atlanta. A win over Atlanta and losses by the New York Jets, Miami Dolphins and New England Pats will give Baltimore a wild card spot.
