Two people with direct knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press that the news conference to introduce Carlos Correa was postponed because of a medical concern.
The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Giants haven't announced any details about the deal.
The conference to welcome Correa was put on hold because the sides were waiting for the results of the testing, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The second person said that a medical issue was flagged during the physical.
According to one of the people, the Giants and Correa agreed on a huge deal on December 13th. He has been on the injured list seven times.
The media availability was supposed to take place at 11 a.m. The event was canceled about three hours before it was to start. The Giants didn't explain why.
It wasn't clear if the sides had talked about changing the agreement.
In eight big league seasons, Carlos Correa has a.279 career average with 155 homers and 553 runs scored. In the playoffs, he has 18 homers and 59RBI.
Durability is one of the only knocks on Correa's resume. He played at least 150 games in a single season.
One year ago, he was a free agent and he signed with the Minnesota Twins for $105.3 million. After a year and $35.1 million, the two-time All-Star can opt out. He returned to the free agent market.
It would be the fourth largest in baseball history. Mike Trout got a $426.5 million, 12-year contract with the Los Angeles Angels; Mookie Betts got a $365 million, 12-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers; and Aaron Judge got $360 million for nine years to remain with the New York Yankees.
In his only season with Minnesota, Correa hit 22 home runs and drove in 64 runs. He played a key role in the Astros' rise from the bottom of the league to their first World Series title.
The Astros' title was ruined by a sign-stealing scheme, and the team's star player, Carlos Correa, has been booed in some cities.
Brandon Crawford has been the Giants' infielder for the last three years.
Crawford can become a free agent if he has a $16 million salary in three years. He has dealt with injuries in the past and might retire at the end of his deal, so the Giants were looking for a new infielder.
A year after winning the NL West, the Giants went 81-81 last year.
