According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Delta plans to make in-flight wi-fi free on a significant portion of its planes. According to reports, the company has been testing the idea of giving SkyMiles members free access to the internet while in the air.

The number of planes in Delta's fleet is expected to increase as the company begins to offer free wi-fi. One of the biggest pain points of trying to stay connected while flying is the fact that in-flight wi-fi can be unreliable or slow, which will likely still be a problem, but more in the way that different flights can often.

Delta is an example because it uses two internet providers. It tested out Starlink, but it doesn't seem like that will be coming soon. While its paid subscription works with both, people with certain T-Mobile plans can get free internet on a limited number of flights, and everyone can send some type of message for free on most flights.

The point is that it is not as simple as just logging in to the internet and using it. Delta began testing free internet service in order to bring it to all of its flights.

Airlines have been competing on tech in order to win customers. Almost every company is adding content from popular streaming services to their in-flight entertainment offerings, as well as offering free wi-fi on its flights. Nothing compares to being able to use your own device to access the internet on your own device. Hopefully that won't be a problem on Delta flights.
