The production of climate neutral e-fuel is being done by several partners.

Volkswagen said Tuesday that a pilot plant in Chile is producing alternative fuel. Millions of gallons of e- fuel will be produced by mid-decade.

Fuel is expected to be used in motor sports and at its performance experience centers in the future. Fuel will be sold to oil companies and others for distribution to consumers.

Water and carbon dioxide are used in the production of e-fuel to make it CO2 neutral.

The company expects to produce 130,000 liters of e- fuel in the pilot phase. Around 55 million liters (14.5 million U.S. gallons) will be added by mid-decade and over 500 million liters (145.3 million U.S. gallons) in two years.

The development of the plant and e-fuels was announced byPorsche in late 2020, when the company said it would invest $24 million in the project. Highly Innovative Fuels is one of the partners.

Vehicle owners can use e-fuels to drive in a more eco-friendly manner. Billions of dollars are required to build a network of charging stations for electric vehicles, but the same infrastructure could be used for gas.

The production of such fuel would allow for the continued production of vehicles such as the Carrera sports car with a traditional engine alongside a new electric model. The driving dynamics of electric vehicles are different than those of traditional engines.

The first synthetic fuel was produced at the site with the filling of a car.

The potential of e Fuels is huge. There are more than one billion cars with engines. Many of these will be on the roads for decades to come, and eFuels offer the owners of existing cars a carbon neutral alternative.

The development of the fuel does not affect the company's plans to have 80% of its lineup consisting of EV by 2030.
