The Taliban promised after taking over that it would allow women and girls to go to school.

Key Background

Since the fall of Kabul to the Taliban, women have mostly been second class citizens. Last year the Taliban banned women from employment, in May they ordered women to cover themselves in public, and last month they banned women from appearing in the parks. As the Taliban reestablishes its interpretation of Islamic law, it faces increasing international condemnation for alleged human rights violations, such as revenge killings against those who worked with the US or the previous, Western-backed government.

Afghanistan's economy is in a poor state due to high prices, the exclusion of women from the workforce, and other factors. 98% of Afghans say they suffer in life, according to a Gallup poll.

The Taliban has an order for women to fully cover their bodies.
