The first gallons of synthetic fuel were pumped into a car by the company. Is that car the one? It's a 911.
When it made a 20 million euro investment into a project withSiemens Energy to create a pilot plant for eFuels, it was the beginning of the discussion about the technology. The house that Ferdinand built backed that up with a further $75m investment and a stake in the holding company for these eFuel production efforts.
Legacy vehicles can operate in the face of growing restrictions on carbon output from passenger vehicles by using eFuels. It is all theory at the moment. No exemptions have yet been granted for eFuels, despite the fact that internal combustion vehicles are already banned in many places. The proposal for CO2 neutral fuels will be drafted by the EU, but only for commercial vehicles.
The Member of the Executive Board atPorsche hopes that the exemption will cover eFuels use in his company's cars. This isn't finalized today.
The image is of a car.
Off-road will be the only place where the eFuels will be used for the foreseeable future. With that series set to switch to carbon-neutral fuels by 2026, it's not hard to see potential there, too.
The splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen is what makes eFuels so valuable. A lot of cheap electricity is required in order for this to be effective. The windiest area in South America is located in Punta Arenas.
The hydrogen from the process is mixed with the CO2 in the air to make a liquid. The raw material can be further refined for a variety of products, including the eFuels that will be used to power its race cars today and hopes to keep its historic vehicles on the road well into the future.
The plan was for 130,000 liters by the end of the year. It seems like the goal will come later given the size of the car and the date. Within the next three years, the company wants to have 55 million liters per annum. The production cost will go down to $2 per liter.
The average price for a liter of fuel in Germany is $1.75. Transport, taxes, and other fees will make eFuels more expensive than traditional fuels for some time to come, but their carbon-neutral nature may make them appealing to commercial applications.
There are many initiatives all around the world. Some regions look for tax benefits while others don't. Which markets might be most favorable for e Fuels is still open.
Regardless of the success of eFuels and exemptions for carbon-neutral internal-combustion,Porsche is sticking to its goal of 80% EV sales by 2030
We have a plan. In addition to e-mobility, we also take care of our ICE cars. It's a brand with a strong history. Since 1963, Porsche has produced over a million cars. It's clear that keeping them running is an incentive.
