One of the largest ultra low cost carriers in the US is Spirit Airlines, and I prefer it over Frontier. I think it comes down to people having unrealistic expectations. In this post I want to share my top tips for making the best of the Spirit Airlines experience.

The plan is for the combined airline to look a lot more similar to JetBlue in the future. For the time being, no changes have been made for passengers. It will be interesting to see how the two fleets are merged.

Let's talk about my top tips for making the most of a Spirit Airlines experience.

Make sure you understand the rules

The ultra low cost carrier, Spirit Airlines, charges extra for everything from seats to carry-on bags, snacks and drinks, and even checked bags.

I think the biggest thing that frustrates people about Spirit is not understanding the rules. And I have to say, I don’t think Spirit is at fault there — the airline is incredibly transparent during the booking process regarding what is and isn’t included. So I think the issue largely comes down to people reading what they want to read, and then acting shocked and outraged when they realize that their wishful thinking doesn’t actually reflect reality.

Booking a ticket on Spirit is important.

  • Understand that just about everything is going to cost you extra
  • Don’t expect you’ll be able to get away with sneaking anything onto the plane (like a full size carry-on, if you didn’t pay for it)
  • Understand that you’ll pay more for extras the longer you wait; it’s cheapest to add bags at the time of booking, and it’s most expensive to add bags at the airport

Pay for a carry-on rather than a checked bag

You have to pay more for carry-on bags and checked bags if you want to take a free item with you. If you check a bag, Spirit charges more to carry on a bag. A carry-on bag costs $65 while a checked bag costs $55 on the below flight.

Spirit Airlines bag fees

I think it is worth paying an extra fee for the carry-on. It is possible to avoid the lines at check-in. Since not many people pay for carry-ons, you should be able to find overhead bin space for your bag.

You will be among the first to board if you pay for a carry-on bag. When you pay for a carry-on you can save yourself a lot of time and money. It is assumed that you are not just taking a personal item, which is the real way to get a deal.

If you travel with more stuff than you can fit in a carry-on, it is advisable to check a bag.

The Big Front Seat concept is one of the reasons that the airline is unique. The seats at the front of the cabin are basically first class, except they don't have any extra service.

If you want your flight to be more comfortable, you should reserve one of these seats. It used to be the deal of the century, as a Big Front Seat would cost up to 50% more. The price of the Big Front Seat has increased due to the fact that the cat is out of the bag.

I recommend the Big Front Seat if you want comfort and can swing it. A lot of people flySpirit because they want to save as much as possible, so this isn't for everyone. Do it if you can spend the extra money.

Plan for how you’re going to entertain yourself

Don't expect to find any entertainment in the back of the plane, make sure you have a plan for how you're going to entertain yourself It is easy to bring your own device with you to watch tv shows or movies.

Most of the airline's fleet now has high-speed wi-fi. It is great to be able to stay productive when you fly with Spirit Airlines. If you want to stream entertainment or get some work done, it's reasonable to pay for it.

Most Spirit Airlines flights have Wi-Fi

Board your Spirit flight last

People crowd the gate area in order to get on the plane as quickly as possible. It is worth doing the opposite in the case of flying with SPIRIT. You don't want to spend more time on the plane than you have to because of the limited seat pitch.

If you want to board last, try to board first.

  • If you have a personal item, it’s going to go underneath the seat in front of you no matter
  • If you have a carry-on bag, there should be plenty of room for it in the overhead bin, given how few people have carry-on bags (compared to other airlines)
Don’t spend more time in Spirit Airlines seats than you have to

Consider buying your ticket at the airport

In the United States, the idea of booking a ticket at the airport rather than online is almost completely out of date. Ultra low cost carriers are exceptions. You can avoid the passenger usage charge by booking in-person at the airport.

You might not get the same price on add-ons if you book online. You can find more information on when it is cheaper to buy Spirit tickets at the airport.

Get a Free Spirit elite status match

The free spirit loyalty program is lucrative. Those who have status with a competing airline can take part in the program. You can avoid a lot of fees if you have Spirit Airlines Gold status. It makes flying with Spirit a lot more convenient.

Have a good attitude

It is important at Spirit, but this is more general advice. Some of the employees at Spirit Airlines are fun to work with. If you treat them well, they'll treat you well.

People let out their frustration on employees for things that aren't their fault. You will probably have a better experience if you just be nice and kind to them.

Enjoy some BuzzBallz

In the same way that I like to taste test the drink selection in international first class, I like to do the same thing with Spirit. Dom Perignon and BuzzBallz are both served in first class. They set the tone for flying with spirit. They will get you a little buzzed, which will make any flight more enjoyable.

Spirit Airlines serves BuzzBallz

The Big Front Seat, high speed wi-fi, and elite status program make Spirit Airlines my favorite ultra low cost airline. The aspects of flying with Spirit aren't great, but hopefully the above tips will make it better for first time flyers.

Even if you never fly with the airline, you should still love it. The airline held other carriers accountable because of the downward pressure it placed on airline pricing. The airline brings something unique to the market and I am sad about it.

There are other ways to make the experience pleasant.
