A picture of Lionel Messi celebrating Argentina's World Cup win has become the most-liked post on the social media platform.

The footballer, who led his team to their first World Cup triumph in 36 years, got more than 57 million likes for his photos.

Argentina won the World Cup on penalties.

The previous record-breaking post was held by a simple picture of an egg.

An egg held the most-liked status.

When it first appeared, people were urged to vote against celebrity in order to topple the record-holder.

The make-up mogul took the record for her photo announcing her baby's name, Stormi, which has since been liked 18 million times.

Messi became the first person to reach 300 million followers on social media.

There were a lot of questions about who was behind the account and how it was able to get so many likes in such a short period of time.

Some said it was a marketing ploy from a large company that had bought followers, but British advertising executive Chris Godfrey has now claimed he created it, along with two others, and that their sole purpose was to get as many likes as possible.

The egg has been surpassed by Lionel Messi, who has several world records of his own.

After the World Cup final, Guinness World Records posted a series of records broken by the victor, noting that Messi had surpassed Germany's Lothar Matthus for the record of most World Cup matches played.

  • 11 - most World Cup Man of the Match awards
  • 19 - most World Cup appearances as captain
  • 5 - most appearances in World Cup tournaments by a male player
  • First person to assist (a goal) at five different World Cups
