Lionel Messi emerged from the plane carrying the trophy as the Albiceleste returned home. There is a time and a place.

Thousands of ecstatic fans gave Argentina's squad a heroes' welcome in the early hours of Tuesday after the plane carrying Lionel Messi and his World Cup-winning teammates touched down.

The Argentine capital has been partying since the country's first World Cup win since Diego Maradona hoisted the trophy in 1982.

The players, wearing their gold winners' medals around their neck and taking turns to hold the World Cup trophy aloft, waved at fans from an open top bus as the lights from thousands of mobile phones sparkled.

The plane, the Aerolineas Argentinas AR1915, was tracked by thousands of people as it traveled all the way from DOHA to Rome.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to gather at the Obelisco monument in the centre of town, and the players were expected to spend a few hours at the AFA facilities near the airport.

Argentina beat France 4-2 on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 draw in which Lionel Messi scored twice and Kylian Mbappe netted three times.

The final of the World Cup will be Messi's last match, though he plans to play a few more games for his country.
