Mastodon saw its user base increase from 300,000 monthly active users to 2.5 million between October and November, according to a new post by the company's CEO. The huge jump in users almost directly followed Musk's new ownership of the company.

The post addressed bans on sharing links to Mastodon, many journalists, and the account itself, as well as the still-in-place ban on Elon Jet. Centralized platforms can impose arbitrary and unfair limits on what you can and can't say while holding your social graph hostage. Mastodon believes that journalists and government institutions should not have to rely on private platforms to reach the public.

There are other alternatives that people are using. Hive, which recently reopened after dealing with some security issues, is headed up by former Waze CEO Noam Bardin. More than 17 million people voted in Musk's recent poll asking if he should step down as the CEO of Twitter, but the bird app is still going strong. The people wanted him to quit. The site is at an all time high according to Musk.

Mastodon's future seems to be sound according to Rochko. We are excited to see Mastodon grow and become a household name in newsrooms across the world, and we are committed to continuing to improve our software to face up to new challenges that come with rapid growth.
