Drew Pyne is transferring to Arizona State from Notre Dame, he announced on Monday.
Sources say that Pyne clicked with the first-year head coach atASU. Pyne was attracted to the program's new energy and playing for a quarterback-friendly head coach because he appreciated the work done in developing Bo Nix.
Sources say that Pyne felt the building of the program. The addition of Pyne is the 26th new recruit or transfer brought in since late November and Pyne wanted to be a part of that program's building. None of the individual commitments were bigger than Pyne.
There are three years left for Pyne to be eligible. He started 10 games for Notre Dame last season and led them to an 8-2 record and a 20th place finish in the regular season. Pyne had a 64.6% completion rate on his passes. A 4-1 record against top 25 teams was part of that 8-2 record.
Pyne impressed the Arizona State staff with his productivity in a pro-style system that's generally conservative and lacks dynamic weapons, as he was Notre Dame's top pass game threat. Pyne was able to take hits and created plays. Pyne was able to stay healthy and absorb hits without getting injured because he wasn't physically imposing. He was able to deliver from different platforms and took care of the ball.
After the 2021 season, many of the program's top players fled to the transfer portal as the program deteriorated. In September, he was let go.
Pyne is a linchpin player for the upcoming season. Two of the more promising young skill players in the Pac-12 emerged last year, as sophomore receiver Elijhah Badger and sophomore tight end Jalin Conyers.
