Shia LaBeouf's character from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull won't be in the next movie, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. It has been known for a while. We now know if the film will ignore him or include him in the story.
James Mangold said fans will find out what happened in the new film. It is an encouraging piece of information, but he wouldn't elaborate. It would have been weird to ignore the fact that Indy has a son who played a big part in his previous adventure, and that his mother married him. It was like if Crystal Skull ignored Marcus and Indy from the previous movie. They were quick to explain that it didn't and that they were dead by the story.
We imagine a similar situation for mutt. During the height of the Vietnam War, the bulk of the book was written. It's very easy to see that character being drafted and possibly dying there. An accident wouldn't be out of the question since he was cavalier with his motorcycle riding. That feels a little less dignified. Maybe he and Indy had a falling out and stopped speaking. There are many ways in which the film can explain his location.
Indy is going to struggle with his old-school ways in that story. Mangold is interested in the idea of a hero at sunset. When the world doesn't have a place for the hero, what does he do? I like to look at classical heroes through the lens of modern attitudes.
