Robert Saleh comes to Zach Wilson's defense (0:58)

The Jets lost to the Lions. There is a time and a place.

1:01 PM ET

New York Jets coach Robert Saleh defended his quarterback, but wouldn't give him the start this week.

Mike White is still being evaluated by doctors, so we don't know which quarterback will start Thursday. The inference is that he prefers White over Wilson, but he insists that Wilson has a bright future and poked critics for being too hard on the second year quarterback.

"This kid is going to be a good quarterback, but the NFL and this new instant- coffee world that we're in just doesn't want to give people time." We looked at him and he had a fine-toothed comb.

Wilson was benched for three games in order to make room for White. Wilson came back from a rib injury on Sunday against the Detroit Lions, but it wasn't enough to save the game. Wilson passed for 317 yards and two touchdown but had a costly third-quarter pick up.

The Jets have virtually no margin for error in the playoffs, so the quarterback decision is important.

Wilson overcame a poor third quarter and was praised for taking a big step.

In his past, when he hit a speedbump in a game, he derailed. He did a good job of getting back on the rails and leading a touchdown drive.

Wilson's 1-yard scoring pass to tight end C.J. Uzomah gave the Jets a 17-13 lead, which they promptly gave away on a 51-yard touchdown reception by Lions tight end Brock Wright.

Wilson missed two open receiver and took two sacks on the Jets' next possession. Greg Zuerlein missed a field goal in the final moments of the game.

Wilson said he needs to be better.

"The frustrating thing is that this kid is going to be a good quarterback, but the NFL and this new instant-coffee world that we're in just doesn't want to give people time. So, we look at him and he's just nitpicked with a fine-tooth comb." Jets coach Robert Saleh on Zach Wilson

The starter will be named on the short week. White has not been in contact with anyone. He wasn't given the green light by the Jets. White said he didn't get any clearance from any of the doctors he consulted.

More scans are needed to see how much he has healed. They thought a week would show more healing and callous to get on the field. He would have to get another doctor to give him that information. There are a lot of obstacles that he would have to overcome.

White was hurt against the Bills. The Jets said last week that they were going to start him against the Lions, but instead they named Wilson the starter.

Wilson's draft history is not a factor in the decision making process. The Jets committed $35 million in guarantees to him.

He said that would never change.

The Jets are hopeful that defensive tackle Quinnen Williams and wide receiverCorey Davis will be able to play. They didn't sit out Sunday. Mims is not going to play.
