Five years after showing off its Semi truck to the public,Tesla started delivering trucks to its customers.

But the company has been noticeably quiet about the vehicle since, having yet to reveal the truck's weight capacity when fully loaded, its price, or when the rest of the company will actually be able to use them.

The latest news may be the reason whyTesla is avoiding those questions. A successful introduction of a 500 mile electric semi truck could be a huge win for a company that desperately needs one.

Frito Delivery

When loaded with heavy cargo, the truck's range takes a huge hit, something that has been suspected by the critics of the company.

A semi can carry a load of Frito-Lay chips for more than 400 miles without the need for a battery. One of the lightest loads is potato chips in air-filled bags, which is why they are limited to 100 miles with the truck.

O'Connell said that the company is planning to eventually haul beverages in the 400 to 500 mile range.

Oliver Dixon, senior analyst at Guidehouse, told the news agency that dragging a trailer full of chips is not the most difficult thing to do. I still think that there is a lot to prove to the commercial vehicle market.

Questions

We don't know how much weight a Semi can carry and we don't know what the drop-off in range will be, so we're not sure.

According to its website, the trucks can travel up to 500 miles on a single charge, but it's not clear what that means.

As a result of non disclosure agreements they signed with the EV maker, PepsiCo and other customers have kept the details of their purchases under wraps.

It is possible that the decision to only complete short trips with heavy loads is a sign that the 500 mile semi truck is oversold.

There is only so much the company can do to make the trucking industry better.

The company is using 36 Semis in its fleet and is going to upgrade facilities for more in the years to come.

There is more on the semi.
