The coach who has coordinated Navy's defense since the beginning of the year is likely to be promoted to head coach. There will be an announcement soon.

Since arriving at Navy four years ago, Newberry has authored a consistent top defense.

Ken Niumatalolo was the winningest coach in Navy history with a record of over 100 victories in 15 seasons. Niumatalolo said he was fired after he lost to Army and finished 4-7.

Under Niumatalolo, the Navy will be sticking to some of the principles of success. The triple-option is expected to continue, according to the athletic director.

The Navy's defenses have been strong. His best season might have been in 2019: Navy went 11-2 and won the Liberty Bowl, and his defense finished No. 10 overall in rush defense.

The nation's top assistant coach was one of the semifinalists for the Broyles Award. He instilled a "Get 6" mindset where the defense tried to get six of the following: three-and-outs, fourth-down stops, turnovers or defensive touchdown in a game. The Navy went 6-0 in the year.

The defense has played well against Army. Navy scored an average of just over 11 points per game during his first three seasons. In Navy's double-overtime loss to Army this year, the game went to overtime because Army scored on a blocked punt.

After working at Northern Michigan, University of the South, the University of the South, Washington & Lee, and graduate assistant jobs at Rice and Southern Arkansas, he became the head football coach at Kennesaw State. The player graduated from the school in 1998.
