Thirty-six people on a Hawaiian flight from Phoenix to Honolulu were injured when it encountered severe turbulence before landing. People flew out of their seats.
There were 281 passengers and 10 crew members on the flight from Phoenix to Honolulu. The aircraft encountered turbulence as it descended towards Honolulu.
Thirty-three passengers and three crew members were injured in the incident as passengers reported that some of them were lifted out of their seats. Twenty of them were taken to nearby hospitals, and eleven of them were diagnosed with serious injuries. Fourteen-month-old was the youngest patient.
The footage shows the damage to the aircraft and the oxygen masks that were used.
One of the passengers said that her mother didn't have a chance to wear her safety belt when turbulence hit the plane.
She hit the ceiling after flying up.
The pilots declared an emergency after the A330 encountered turbulence and began its descent. The flight was given priority to land by the air traffic controllers.
Hawaiian Airlines stated in a statement that the aircraft encountered severe turbulence but made a smooth landing. There was a patch of unstable air that caught the flight crew by surprise.
“HA35 from PHX to HNL encountered severe turbulence & landed safely in HNL at 10:50 a.m. today. Medical care was provided to several guests & crewmembers at the airport for minor injuries while some were swiftly transported to hospitals for further care.”

According to the National Weather Service in Hawaii, there was a weather advisory posted for storms in the areas that would have included the flight path.
The passengers and crew were doing exactly what they were doing at the time of the incident.
