The lousy performance of the Nintendo Switch is not going away. Grainy, stuttery graphics are synonymous with playing games on the system, which hasn't gotten a spec upgrade to boost how games look and run. In our reviews of the best games on the console, we have remarked on the poor visuals.
Nintendo's modern software, which is bigger, better, and more ambitious in scope than ever before, is being pulled in the opposite direction by the Switch's hardware. The strategy of supporting a low powered device that gets slowly updated is the same as it was for Nintendo's previous consoles. The Switch is one of Nintendo's best-selling consoles and has been for a long time. We're past due for an update.
The Switch wasn't capable of what The Breath of the Wild showed it to be.
After five years, it's time for a more powerful Switch that can erase some of these past and future issues with a faster chip that can display games in 4K. The launch of the device was delayed due to the shortage of chips caused by the coronaviruses. The only thing we have gotten is an uninspired Switch OLED, which has the same internal specifications and screen size as the Switch, but with a slightly bigger one.
The Nintendo Switch is one of the biggest tech mistakes of the year due to Nintendo's lack of action.
Valve's steam deck is one of them. The Switch is over 100 million strong globally, but it is not a meaningful competitor in terms of sales volume. The cost of its custom hardware is competitive with the Nintendo Switch, and it can run many demanding PC games with decent performance.
The power of the steam deck isn't the only thing that makes it attractive. Buying one immediately made me want to play the cheaper Steam version of games instead of the Switch version that I usually buy for on-the-go games. Like the Switch, the Deck can be docked to display on your TV and run games better.
The deck isn't perfect Many steam games may not work as they should. Its design is not bag friendly. The deck has provided many of the benefits that I wanted from a switch pro, so it is hard to resist it.
To play exclusive games from Nintendo and to get my fill of retro games will always be reasons for me to return to the Switch. My entertainment center is not being left. I refuse to buy any of the exclusives until Nintendo releases a faster switch. I will buy the switch pro when it arrives.
If there was a perfect time to launch a meaningful hardware update to the Switch, it would be on May 12th, 2023, the day that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will be released. It is the follow-up to The Breath of the Wild, a brilliant game that showed all that the Switch was capable of, but not capable of immediately.
Nintendo needs to reverse the stigma that it equates not-great performance in many games to the switch. I hope that the next iteration leans on the techniques of the two companies to make the graphics look better. I don't think Nintendo will be able to keep up with hardware during the next five years.
