Messi and Argentina celebrate World Cup win with open-top bus parade (2:21)

Argentina beat France in the World Cup final to win the title. There is a time and a place for it.

8:00 AM ET

Despite winning the World Cup for the first time in 26 years, Argentina won't take over at the top of the world ranking.

Brazil has held the top spot since February when they defeated Belgium at the summit. Even though Argentina failed to make it past the quarterfinals, they haven't been able to overtake them.

The World Cup is news and features.

At the World Cup, Brazil won three games and lost to Croatia on penalties.

Argentina won four games, lost one and were twice victorious on penalties, including the final on Sunday as they beat France 4-2 on spot kicks.

It's not enough for Argentina to be the world's top-ranked team because they won't be there for long. Winning a game in a row is worth less ranking points than winning a game in a row in regulation time. If either Argentina or France had won the final, they would have gone to the top of the rankings.

Argentina and France both move up one place into second and third respectively, while Belgium slides down two places to fourth after failing to make it past the group stage. The Netherlands moved up two places to sixth.

Croatia's third place finish at the World Cup makes them the biggest climber in the top 10. Italy dropped two places to eighth. Spain is down three places to tenth.

Australia and Morocco are the climbers who have risen the most. Australia made the round of 16 and the top ranked African team is now the top ranked team in 11th. In 1998 they were 10th in the world, but as recently as 2015 they were 92nd.

Thanks to their win over Brazil, the country has gained 10 places up to 33rd.

The United States takes over as the top-ranked team from Mexico.

Canada and Saudi Arabia are the biggest fallers, both dropping 12 places. Wales plummets nine spots into 28th, while Serbia plummets eight to 29th.

The new world ranking will be published on Thursday.
