If harassment isn’t tackled soon, many women will go permanently offline to avoid online abuse.

Women will leave the internet in 2023 unless we act. A survey shows that one third of young women have been sexually harassed online, and that women are more upset by these experiences than men are. A UNESCO study of journalists found that 73 percent had experienced online violence, and 20 percent had been abused offline in connection to online abuse. Hundreds of thousands of harassing messages and threats of physical confrontation were received by the employer of a Brazilian journalist after she investigated campaign-finance discrepancies around a presidential candidate. For a month, she had to cancel all her events. Both women said that they dared question power while being visible on social media.
