Gamestream, a feature for streaming PC games, is going to be removed from the Shield TVs and tablets. Shield owners have been able to stream games to their TV from a PC at up to 60 frames per second in 4K resolution.
Shield owners will be disappointed to hear that they will no longer be able to use GameStream. The GameStream feature will be completely removed in a February update.
It's recommended that you use Steam Link.
The recommended method of streaming PC games to a Shield device is called Steam Link. If you want to stream games from your PC, you need the Steam Link app on your Shield TV. If you don't subscribe to the cloud gaming service, you won't get 4k streaming and high frame rates.
GameStream will work for some time, but you can refuse the update and it will stop working. You will need the latest game app to use services.
The open source implementation of the GameStream protocol could be used. It is possible to play PC games on almost any device. It should be possible to use alternatives like Sunshine as GameStream hosts.
We reached out to the company for comment on the removal and we will update you as soon as possible.
