When Apple launched its first MacBooks with its in-house M1 chip, company CEO Tim Cook said all Macs would run on Apple Silicon within two years.
It didn't happen. The company's most powerful machine, the Mac Pro, can only be configured with Intel chips, even though Apple switched to M1 and M2 chips in most of its lineup.
According to a new report, this is because Apple is building a slightly different new Mac Pro.
One of the configurations for the Mac Pro was to be as powerful as two M1 Max chips combined and the other as powerful as four M1 Max chips combined.
The Mac Pro was pushed back for a later date, despite the fact that the M1 Ultra was the first of those chips. Apple considered building the Mac Pro around the new "M2 Ultra" and "M2 Extreme" chips.
Apple decided that a Mac Pro based on this chip would be too expensive for most buyers, and that it would be a niche product.
The Mac Pro will only be built around the M2 Ultra according to reports. It should be a versatile machine, with the option to expand the memory, storage, and other components.
A new version of the Mac mini with either an M2 or M2 Pro chip is one of the new products Apple is working on. Apple is working on successors of its products.
The launch timing on these products could be different. Early next year, the new MacBook Pro laptops should be arriving. There is no word on when the new Mac Pro, Mac mini, or iMac will be available. The new displays will be compatible with the Macs that they're best matched with.
