Fans of the company may soon have more options. A refresh of the 32-inch Pro Display XDR is one of the new external monitors being developed by Apple. According to Gurman, the upcoming screens will feature built-in Apple Silicon and a dedicated A13 Bionic processor. The updated Pro Display XDR could be shipped after the M2 Mac Pro arrives, according to him.
It's not clear if Apple's new monitors will include a refresh. In October, display analyst Ross Young said that the company was about to release a monitor with a 27 inch mini-LED panel. It looked like Apple was going to update the studio display with ProMotion technology.
Gurman gives an update on the refresh of the Mac Pro. He reported in October that the computer would ship with an optional Extreme variant of the M2 chip, which was said to feature a processor with up to 48 cores and 512 gigabytes of memory. According to Gurman, Apple has stopped working on those plans.
"Based on Apple's current pricing structure, an M2 Extreme version of a Mac Pro would probably cost at least $10,000 without any other upgrades, making it an extremely niche product that likely isn't worth the development costs, engineering resources and production bandwidth it would require," Gurman wrote
According to a report, the remaining model will have an M2 Ultra chip with up to 24 processor cores, 76 processor cores and at least 192 gigabytes of memory. The option to add more memory is included in the new Mac Pro. It will be interesting to see if Apple can offer that kind of upgradability.
Two years after the release of its first M1 chip, Apple was supposed to complete its transition to Apple Silicon. It has taken Apple so long to announce a new Mac Pro because of features and changes in manufacturing plans. Gurman did not say when the new model would arrive, but he did say that it would probably arrive next year.
