Dozens of people were injured when a flight from Phoenix to Honolulu encountered severe turbulence.
The company confirmed in a statement to Insider that Hawaiian Airlines flight 35 experienced turbulence before it landed in Hawaii. Several people with minor injuries were treated at the airport, while 13 passengers and three crew members were taken to the hospital.

Honolulu Emergency Medical Services said at least 36 people were hurt. There were injuries including head injuries. Jim Ireland, the director of the Honolulu Emergency Services Department, said that one person was knocked unconscious.

The "fasten seatbelt" sign was on when the turbulence occurred according to Jon Snook, executive vice president and COO of Hawaiian Airlines. These air pockets can happen without warning. Extreme turbulence is rare. He said it was a very extreme case.
A damaged ceiling in the plane cabin and passengers being taken away from the airport were shown in photos and videos shared on social media.

The passenger said that her mother flew up and hit the ceiling after the turbulence hit.
The plane experiences two altitude drops and one time a water bottle hit the ceiling so hard it caused a crack, according to another passenger. People around her were crying.
