Promo poster for Avatar: The Way of Water.

There has been a lot of discussion online about what kind of reception the movie would get. All eyes have been on James Cameron's long-awaited second outing to the world of Pandora and its blue cat people with dreadlocks as a result of solid social media impressions and reviews.

The way of water is making waves. The film has made a worldwide opening of $435 million, with most of that take coming from international audiences. It is the second- highest opening of the year and the third- highest of the era. The first and second places go to Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange 2. It is on track to net $134 million in the US, which is on the low end of projections.

Following the film's strong opening numbers, the film's director thanked audiences for seeing the film "as it was always meant to be seen." He has been stressing the importance of going to the cinemas to see Water and its predecessor. This film has been very personal for me. It is gratifying that so many of you have seen it.

Variety has noted that after a soft opening, the movies gain legs. The film needs to make $2 billion to break even in order to get more sequels. The good news is that M3GAN won't be a big hit until January 6th, meaning the rest of the month.

It is the holidays, and so it is cold out, if not snowing. The three-hour film may deter some people from seeing it until Disney+ releases it in February or March.

The post has been updated to include a video statement from James CAMERON.
