According to documents from the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the US government should stop the importation of non-human primate for laboratory use.
According to documents obtained by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) and a case report by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, there have been six cases of the disease in primate imported from Cambodia to the US.
A request for comment from the CDC was not responded to.
Melioidosis is a rare but potentially deadly disease caused by the pathogen B pseudomallei. According to the CDC, B pseudomallei is a Tier 1 select agent with the potential to be a bio terrorism agent.
There is no indication that the CDC or research industries have been transparent with the public about these diseases.
According to the case report, one of the macaques imported to the US from Cambodia was diagnosed with B pseudomallei after arriving in the US. Imported non-human primate, or NHPs, are held in a CDC mandated 31 day quark for testing for infectious diseases.
Concerns about zoonotic transmission and the introduction of a Tier 1 select agent into the environment led to the death of the macaque. The monkeys that were shipped with the monkey appeared to be healthy at the end of theQuarantine period, and were released from the CDC mandatedQuarantine.
Animals can carry B pseudomallei into the environment. Jones-Engel said that monkeys imported from Asia can harbor the pathogen for a long time. The public has not been warned of the danger by the CDC.
Imported animals can introduce the B pseudomallei into the US, according to the report. Melioidosis is not a disease that should be considered.
The report identified five other macaques from Cambodia in separate shipments that were diagnosed with B pseudomallei, and four others several months after they'd been released fromQuarantine.
It is not uncommon for the disease to be transmitted from animals to humans. Travelers to Asia or Northern Australia are the majority of the cases in the US.
On the same day that Peta obtained a response to a freedom of information request, the CDC issued a warning about the presence of B pseudomallei in the environment. Two people in the state of Mississippi were diagnosed with melioidosis, one in 2020 and the other in 2022. Both were hospitalized but recovered from their injuries.
The increase in primate imports has been accompanied by an increase in the number of monkeys arriving with zoonotic diseases. There are two types ofviruses, the Filoviruses and Marburgviruses. Both are elite agents.
The number of primate deaths on arrival increased from two to 11 in just one year. Overall mortality increased from 31 to 136 over five years as a result of the rise in the number of ill and recovered primate.
Dr. Nedim Buyukmihci is a veterinary adviser for Action for Primates. They become distressed when they are trapped, transported or confined. The risk of transporting and using non-human primate in laboratories is emphasized in this data.
The long-tailed macaques, natives of south-east Asia, are the most heavily traded primate for use in laboratories and are now in danger due to the exploitation by the research industry.
The majority of macaques exported from China to the US were not traded during the coronaviruses epidemic. Increased demand from the research industry has resulted in a rise in monkey exports from Cambodia, Vietnam, and other countries. During their capture, Indonesian trappers were filmed killing wild macaques.
The number of macaques exported from Cambodia to the USA has more than tripled in the past year. The US is the largest importer of primate in the world, and the only country that has legally imported wild macaques in the last three years.
The increase of diseases in the NHP is possibly due to the increase in wild-caught monkeys being inserted into the monkey farms and/or exported.
In toxicity testing, long-tailed macaques are used. The monkeys are injected or restrained with a tube into their stomachs. The side effects of dosing can last for months or years.
There would be no production of medicines without animal research, according to proponents. According to the US Food and Drug Administration, animal tests have a failure rate of over ninety percent.
There are 8 monkey farms in Cambodia. In November of this year, federal prosecutors charged eight members of a primate smuggler ring for their role in moving 3,000 wild macaques from Cambodia to the United States. Two Cambodian government wildlife officials and the owner and staffers of Vanny Bio Resources were indicted by the US justice department. Two co-conspirators in the US are included in the indictment.
Cambodia stopped exporting primate to the US, according to the CDC.
There is a global wildlife trade in the US. It is a serious threat to public health. The doctor said that it must end.
