According to a report from Mark Gurman, Apple is working on a number of new external monitors. The Pro Display XDR is expected to be updated in this lineup.
Adding Apple's own chips should help the displays "rely less on resources from the attached computer." The A13 chip in the studio display allowed it to support features like Center Stage, spatial audio, and "Hey Siri" voice commands.
It is not clear what kind of monitors Apple has in the works. Ross Young, a supply chain analyst, says Apple could release a 27 inch mini-LED display with ProMotion in the first quarter of next year.
The Pro Display XDR costs $4,999 and comes with a 32-inch 6K panel that can reach 1,600 nits of brightness. Gurman says that the new monitor might not ship until after the release of the upcoming Mac Pro.
After the release of the M1 chip, Apple was supposed to launch the Mac Pro by now in order to meet its goal of converting all of its Macs to Apple Silicon in two years. Features and a possible production relocation to Vietnam have caused delays in its development. Gurman says the chip's complexity, as well as the cost and resources required to produce it, may have led Apple to scrap it.
The Mac Pro is expected to ship with the new M2 Ultra chip, which is expected to have up to 24 CPU cores and 76 graphics cores with the ability to support at least 192GB of memory. Users will be able to add more memory and storage with the Mac Pro. Apple could launch its M2 Pro and M2 Max-equipped MacBook Pros early next year. The Mac Pro has suffered internal delays for similar reasons as the iMac Pro, but Apple is working on an iMac Pro with Apple Silicon.
