Argentina won their first world title in 26 years when Aurelien Tchouameni missed a penalty, but the Golden Glove-winning goalkeeper saved the other one.

France had come from two goals down to level over 90 minutes with Kylian Mbappe scoring twice in two minutes.

The France forward completed his hat trick in the 118th with another spot-kick after Messi had put the Argentine side in front.

Messi converted a 23rd-minute penalty as Argentina went 2-0 up in the first half.

Angel Di Maria was the beneficiary of the four-pass counter- attack, as he finished well.
