The idea of a live-action Barbie movie coming to theaters has been baffling for a while. Now that the first look at Gerwig's take on the popular toy is out, those concerns seem to have been largely vanished, as the trailer playing in front of The Way of Water looks pretty rad.
The trailer's first half is an homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey. There is an opening in which Helen Mirren narrates about how Barbie was to young girls what the monolith was to the cavemen of 2001. Older filmgoers did side-by-side comparisons that gained traction on the internet over the weekend. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
The trailer for the Barbie movie is eye-catching because no one really knew what it would be. It's a little weird, it's funny, and it works better than you would think. It makes you curious about what the rest of the marketing campaign is going to be when it gets to the Super Bowl and the Oscars.
Barbie will be released in theaters on July 21st, 2023.
Indiewire has a story about it.
