A miracle in which a small amount of oil burned for eight days is the most common explanation. This is not the original reason that Hanukkah lasts for so long, according to a scholar.

The "eternal flame" in the temple is said to have gone out while the Selucids were in control.

The Maccabees were unable to find oil to light the temple flame because they only had a single cruse of oil.

The legend says that when the temple flame was lit from a single cruse of oil, it lasted eight days to complete the religious purification process.

These are the eight days when Hanukkah is celebrated.

The association of this story with the eight days of Hanukkah is strengthened by the ritual of lighting candles on the hanukkiah, a nine-branched candlestick. The main branches of the candlestick represent one day of Hanukkah while a ninth candle is used to light the others.

The story of the miracle of oil was written hundreds of years after Hanukkah, according to David Kraemer, a professor of the Talmud and Rabbinics at the Jewish Theological Seminary.

Hanukkah begins on the 25th day of the month of Kislev and lasts until the second day of the month of Teslev, which is also known as Zos Chanukah.

The Jewish months are based on a luni-solar calendar and move around compared with the calendar used in most countries which is based on the Gregorian calendar.

The start of Hanukkah can be found as early as Thanksgiving or as late as December 25th.

The beginning and end of Hanukkah will be on December 18 and December 26.
