Over the past five years, the league said in a message to owners, teams have spent over one billion dollars on fired coaches and front-office executives.

At the owners' meetings in Dallas, league officials gave out spreadsheets detailing how much each team was spending on their former employees.

The league wanted each team to see the full cost of instability.

Carolina's Matt Rhule and Indianapolis' Frank Reich both have four years left on their contracts and will be fired in the year 2022.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Rhule's new job at the University of Nebraska will help offset most of his salary with the Carolinas. With the constant stream of hiring and firing coaches, the risk is high.

Three different coaches are being paid at the same time. Pat Shurmur and Joe Judge were both fired with a lot of time left on their contracts, while Brian Daboll is in his first year with the team.

The Houston Texans fired David Culley after just one season, and they now have to make a decision on the future of first-year coach lovie smith.

The Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders have both had disappointing seasons this year and their first-year coaches are under scrutiny.

The league wants to reduce turnover among coaches and executives because of the high costs.
