  • TikTok will likely be banned from U.S. government-issued smartphones.
  • The U.S. Senate has approved a bill that makes it illegal to download the app on any government device.

The Senate unanimously passed legislation prohibiting the installation of the app on government devices.

The "No TikTok on Government Devices Act (opens in new tab)" was introduced by Senator Josh Hawley. The House of Representatives needs to approve it before it can be sent to the president.

The US is concerned that ByteDance may give user information to the Chinese government. In the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, the bill was unanimously passed.

The Chinese Communist Party has a horse named TikTok. It has no place on government devices until it is forced to sever ties with China.

CBS News reported that the FBI raised concerns in November. The FBI has national security concerns, according to the director. It's possible that the Chinese government could use it to control data collection on millions of users.

Guidelines will be developed by the Office of Management and Budget for how government agencies will prevent TikTok from being downloaded. National security operations and law enforcement will not be included.

The US government has banned the use of TikTok before. TikTok was banned from app stores in the US in 2020 due to national security concerns. The president reversed the ban last year.
