The beloved California mountain lion P-22 was euthanized on Saturday due to multiple injuries and illnesses. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife said that P-22 had been captured on Monday after being suspected of being in distress. On November 9, a dog was killed in the Hollywood Hills. P-22 tried to kill another dog. A series of tests showed that the mountain lion sustained trauma to his head, right eye, and internal organs as a result of a vehicle strike. The mountain lion was found to have a number of ailments, including a significant loss of weight and arthritis. "P-22's advanced age, combined with chronic, disabling, life-shortening conditions and the clear need for extensive long-term veterinary intervention left P-22 with no hope for a positive outcome." He may have had other underlying conditions not yet fully characterized by diagnostics. P-22 was 12 years old when he died, making him an old age mountain lion. The news that P-22 helped "inspire a new era of urbanConservation" in the state of California was written by the governor. He said that P-22 was an icon. California Rep. Ted Lieu wrote "Rest in Peace" while his colleague wrote "heartbroken" by the death of P-22.—Gavin Newsom (@GavinNewsom) December 17, 2022

The Santa Monica Mountains are believed to be where P-22 was born. The smallest range for an adult mountain lion has been recorded by the National Park Service.
A local celebrity in his own right, the cat was known for his antics. P-22 was blamed for the death of a koala at the LA Zoo and survived after being exposed to rat poison.
The executive director of the National Wildlife Federation wrote that P-22 "never fully got to be a mountain lion" because of the lack of wildlife space in the heart of LA.
"I hope his future is filled with endless forests without a car or road in sight and where deer are plentiful, and I hope he finally finds the mate that his island existence denied him his entire life, and that's what I hope he's going to do now that he'
