While whoever took the reins of DC was always going to have a hard time, the beginning of the James Gunn era, who is now running the place with Peter Safran, has seemed especially turbulent.
While I like many things James Gunn has done over the years, going back to his past work, and hearing about at least some of his plans for the future, questions keep coming up in my mind about whether this has a chance of working out or not as DC
Why don't we keep Henry asSuperman?
I understand that this is not going to happen, but I feel like there had to be a middle ground here. It was obvious to all DC fans that Henry Cavill was perfect as Clark Kent. Even if they reset universe continuity, they could have kept Cavill in the part, as the new young actor will be compared to him.
Is the style of the man right for the city?
The secondSuicide Squad movie, which was well-reviewed, but did not perform well at the box office, was the main contribution to DC made by James Gunn. It is not clear how that will translate to the main JLA members. Early rumblings about his plans to incorporate more non-main characters as major DC tentpoles seems odd, like a theoretically idea to make him Lobo instead of the main character.
More for you.
That's right.
The Forbes Snowman has been found.
Was it wise to make a big deal of the rock?
The Rock overstepped his bounds by trying to shape the DC universe to heavily feature Black Adam, but going this hard in the other direction has been nothing short of embarrassment. The Rock makes the most money in Hollywood. He was very passionate about the future of DC, but now the narrative has taken him out of it. I think that Mr. Johnson has been able to change the guard without making enemies.
There are video games in the DCU.
One thing that made me wonder if he was being too ambitious about universe continuity was the fact that he said it would include video games as well. Video games take a long time to develop and are fraught with delays, which is why they haven't tried to tie video games into the movie universe. It is the same reason that you rarely see video game tie-in games for movies anymore. It would be difficult to include DC canon video games into a TV and movie schedule.
What happens when there's more than oneverse?
The way DC is currently arranged makes you wonder what is happening to everything else that is being made inside it. The Arrowverse is coming to an end. But what about the other characters? James Gunn appeared for multiple cameos last season and he clearly loves the show. There is a sequel to the Batman universe that is supposed to be on HBO. It was reported that he was integrating that into his plans, but he didn't deny it. There are a lot of questions that need to be answered, like why if Cavill is out as Superman, and if Miller's flash still comes out.
All the way back to Slither is where I like to see the work of the man. I have a lot of concerns from what I have seen. Things will take shape in the months and years to come, but it is a bit off-putting to say the least.
