"Are we not building tribal knowledge with new employees without an office culture?" was the question Benioff asked. Benioff followed up with a joke about asking for a friend.

It was an issue that he said was affecting employees who joined the company this year and last. The productivity problem might be related to the nature of widespread remote work, which has become more common due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

A company spokesman told CNBC that the company has a hybrid work environment that allows leaders and teams to work together. They have the ability to decide when and where they come together.

According to CNBC, as well as departures by C-Suite execs such as the imminent departure of Stewart Butterfield, the company has been dealing with a weakened economy.

Many positive responses to Benioff's message were reported. He hoped employees would agree that it was disappointing that their private conversations were almost immediately given to the public media.
