According to people with knowledge of the situation, First Quantum Minerals continues to operate a huge copper mine in Panama despite a government order to close it.
The Commerce Ministry was instructed by the president to take charge of maintenance. The people said that there needs to be a resolution to withdraw contracts and that mining and shipments continue.
They said that the government isn't closed to a restart of talks in order to reach a deal before mining is stopped.
There was a tax fight that halted the output of the giant Panama copper mine.
The Commerce Ministry didn't respond to calls.
The Cobre Panama project cost at least $10 billion to build according to the company. The facility is west of Panama City and started production in 2019. At full capacity, the mine can produce more than 300,000 metric tons of copper annually.
