Musk said he is taking legal action against the creator of a bot that tracked his private jet and that he has changed the rules on sharing live locations.
Musk wrote on November 6 that his commitment to free speech extends even to not banning the account following his plane, even though that is a direct personal safety risk. The personal account of the creator of the account that used publicly available data to track Musk's plane was suspended as well.
One day after Musk said a car carrying his son was followed by a stalker, Sweeney's plane- tracking accounts were suspended as well. Musk wrote on Wednesday night that he was going to file a lawsuit.
Last night, car carrying lil X in LA was followed by crazy stalker (thinking it was me), who later blocked car from moving & climbed onto hood.
Legal action is being taken against Sweeney & organizations who supported harm to my family.
Musk explained the new policy on location sharing in the same thread. He wrote that any account that doxes real-time location info of anyone will be suspended. Links to sites with real-time location information are posted. Someone traveling on a slightly delayed basis isn't a safety problem.
AdvertisementSweeney, a student at the University of Central Florida, wrote on Facebook that his accounts had been suspended by the social networking site. In a Mastodon post, he talked about his account suspensions. He said that Elon gave him no warning and that he suspended all of his accounts. NASA planes, experimental aircraft, and weather planes are included.
If we get a response from Musk or his lawyers, we will update this article. Musk did not give any information about the legal action against Sweeney.
Sweeney told the New York Post that he doesn't think Musk's threat of legal action is a real one.
The account is on other platforms as well. The account uses flight- tracking data from the exchange. Bill Gates' jets, Mark Zuckerberg's jet, and Air Force One were all tracked by Sweeney.
The updated policy was announced by the official safety account. In most cases, sharing someone else's live location is not allowed.
There is a risk of physical harm when someone shares their live location on social media. We will suspend accounts dedicated to sharing someone else's live location and remove Tweets that share this information in the near future.
AdvertisementThere are exceptions to the rule. You can still share your location on the social networking site. This policy does not prohibit the sharing of historical location information on social media. It is permissible to share location information related to a public engagement or event.
In the updated private information and media policy, this week's changes are outlined. The policy hadn't been updated in months. The heading asked what was in violation of the policy.
Live location information, including information shared on Twitter directly or links to 3rd-party URL(s) of travel routes, actual physical location, or other identifying information that would reveal a person’s location, regardless if this information is publicly available.
"We define live as real-time and/or same-day information where there is potential that the individual could still be at the named location," the policy says. There was no mention of "live locations."
The accounts that Sweeney ran will be automatically suspended. Your account will be suspended if you share someone's live location.
It may be difficult to enforce the new policy due to its different exceptions. Sharing someone's home addresses or live locations to seek help after a natural disaster is one exception.
If the information is not shared during a crisis situation to assist with humanitarian efforts or in relation to public engagement events, we will remove any accounts that share someone's live location.
Even if there is no abusive intent, live location information may be removed. Sharing information that is publicly available elsewhere in a non-abusive manner is included in the updated document.
