Adam Silver expects the NBA to have its first female head coach by the end of the year.
"I would be very disappointed if we didn't see a female head coach in the NBA in the next five years," Silver said.
15 women have worked as assistant coaches in the NBA. There are five female assistant coaches in the NBA today.
More females have been hired by the NBA in recent years. While the league has received praise for its progress in multiple areas, Silver said he doesn't think enough progress has been made in hiring practices.
As much as professional sports has led, we're a bit behind in this area, Silver said. There should be more female head coaches. Right now, we should have a female head coach. We should have more women referees, and we are working very hard on it.
A woman can eventually break that barrier in the NBA, according to Silver. The first woman to serve as head coach in a game when Popovich was away from the team in 2020 was Hammon, who had been an assistant for eight seasons. The first championship in franchise history was achieved by the team under the leadership of Hammon.

Bernstein said that his voice carries an extraordinary amount of weight. It affects all of the sports. He was as vocal as he was about the NBA being behind the eight ball when it came to women in coaching and officials.
