The plane is not ready to land yet.
Tomlin said he wouldn't name a starting quarterback until Saturday, even though Kenny Pickett will be listed as doubtful. First-team practice reps have been taken by bothMitch Trubisky andMason Rudolph.
The coach said that they had some clarity about where they were going. It's not necessary to land the plane until it's required to. We've gotten some work fromMitch andMason. The fact that both guys have split reps and seen enough situations makes us very comfortable in considering them.
After taking a hard hit from Patrick Queen in the first quarter, Pickett left the game. After being evaluated for a concussion and given the all clear, Pickett played one more series before being put in the protocol. He was limited in what he could do in the three practices of the team.
While Trubisky gave the team a spark with chunk plays and big passes, he also threw three costly turnovers, including two in scoring position and one on a deep ball to Diontae Johnson.
Trubisky said to protect the football. I made some really good throws. I have to take care of the football, especially in the red zone, so we can come away with the points. I'm excited to get that chance this week.
In an effort to prepare both quarterbacks, Trubisky, who started the first four games of the season before being replaced by Pickett at halftime of the Week 4 loss to the New York Jets, split first-team reps with long-time backup Rudolph. He has been inactive for every game this season and has mostly been used in practice.
The reps were split evenly down the middle. We need to split the reps and do some scout teams. There was a lot of competition. I was happy about our preparation. Everyone was locked in and we had a good week of work. I'm looking forward to bouncing back and getting this team back on track.
