A few years ago, we had a funny story that happened to us. My son tried to bring a knife into the airport. At the time, this story added a lot of stress to an already stressed out day.

The backdrop

Our family went to Universal Studios in Florida in 2019. Since my dad is a retired military man, he was able to buy a special kind of military ticket that was good for four days at Universal Studios for the entire year of 2019. We went to the park for 2 days in January and then were going to come back to Florida in November.

There is a hotel review of the Homewood Suites by Hilton.

We arrived at the airport after our flight left CVG. We wanted to get a snack at The Club CVG before we left, but it wasn't meant to be.

Split up at security

We all have Global Entry and should have had PreCheck, but not all of us did. I don't know what happened. I went to the Frontier check-in desk to make sure our Global Entry numbers were in the system. The guy at the check-in counter was not happy with me. We decided to split up at security after they left. While the rest of the family went through the Pre-Check line, I took my daughter through the regular line.

When I got through security, I met up with my family and my wife immediately noticed a problem. My son forgot that he had a Scout multitool in his backpack.

Apparently this must run in the family as my dad tells me the story of when he went through airport security with a giant Leatherman knife in his bag. My dad replied "I've been looking all over for that thing" when confronted by the agent.

Finding a place to mail it back

It was not the Swiss Army Knife that my son was grateful for, but he did not want to lose it. The agent told us that we could mail it back to ourselves. He pointed towards where we could mail it after I got out of security. When I finished, he said I could just find him and not have to go through security again.

I only found a single blue USPS dropoff box when I went over to where he had said. The hallway I checked was empty. I'm wondering what I should do with this. I don't have anything except a pen to write my address on. I don't know what the agent was thinking when he asked, "what do I need to do... to make this man go away?"

The lady at the Delta counter is the first one I see when I return to the ticket counter. I went up to her and asked if there was a mail center there and she said no. Give me your boarding pass, and we can send it to you.

She told me that there was nothing she could do for me. I went to the Frontier counter to get the same man who I re-printed all of our boarding passes. The cutoff time for checking bags on our flight had passed, but he suggested that we leave it with claim downstairs.

The Frontier baggage claim office is located at the baggage claim area. Allegiant and Air Canada share a contract baggage office at CVG.

I told the lady at the baggage counter about the situation. She said that they couldn't hold that kind of stuff. I told her that we could hold this. The Frontier check-in agent told her so. She agreed to take it after I waited for her. I ran back through security after she took my name. We didn't get to eat at The Club because it was for my flight.

Getting the knife on our way back

Nobody was at the baggage desk when we stopped back at it. I commiserating with a lady whose suitcase had been destroyed. We waited for 30 minutes before the lady showed up. We were on our way when she remembered me and pulled out the knife.

I learned not to try to bring knives through security. My son may also have learned that lesson. There is still time for a debate.

We had a great time at the hotel that we stayed at. With the 5th night free on award stays, we were able to stay in a 2 bedroom suite for 5 nights for less than a million dollars.
