A group of 40 House Democrats, led by Rep. David Cicilline, introduced legislation on Thursday to prevent former President Trump from holding future federal office.
Section 3 of the amendment states that anyone who took an oath to support the Constitution and then became involved in rebellion will not be allowed to hold any office under the United States.
The legislation was announced by Cicilline, who said that Trump intended to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
He said that you don't get to be the leader of a government.
According to the release, the bill shows how Trump engaged in the insurrection.
The bill shows how Trump encouraged the violence and tried to intimidate state and federal officials when they did not support his false claims of the election being stolen.
According to the 14th amendment, Donald Trump is disqualified from ever holding federal office again and Congress has the power to implement this prohibition.
Last month, Cicilline sent a letter to his Democratic colleagues asking them to co-sponsors a bill to prevent Trump from being president.
The Senate acquitted Trump after he was accused of inciting insurrection in January. The first time Trump was impeached was in December of last year.
The first major candidate to announce a run for the presidency in 2024 was Donald Trump.
After the Civil War, the 14th Amendment was approved.
