If you haven't seen it in a while, it's probably because it's the highest grossing film of all time. It is a film that many of us saw when it was released, but it is not on TV all that much and, as a result, is not some kind of perennial experience for the majority.
Today is the premiere of the sequel, The Way of Water. The film has a lot of buzz but it might be a good idea to take a quick look. The best bet is to watch the first movie. It holds up great on Disney+. If you don't have time, we've put together a list of important facts you need to remember to appreciate the movie.
It will take several years of space travel for humans to get to Pandora. The home of the Na'vi is filled with unique creatures, plants, and mountains that float in the sky. The Na'vi use their tails to communicate.
Most of the unobtanium is buried under the Na'vi homeland and the group called the RDA is there to mine for it. A small group of humans are studying and learning from the Na'vi.
Jake is a marine who lost his legs. He had an identical twin brother who was going to study the Na'vi but he died. Jake went in his place.
Jake is able to go in place of his brother because the lead scientist on Pandora developed a system where a human's consciousness can be transferred into a Na'vi-like body. Since she made one for Jake's twin brother, he can use it.
Jake has a new body. While Grace wants him to use it to learn more about the Na'vi culture, the head of RDA's security asks Jake to undermine that, because they don't want him to. He wants him to go to the Na'vi to find out what it will take to get them to leave their homes.
The Omaticaya are a group of Na'vi who worship in the forest. The leader's daughter, Neytiri, is tasked with teaching Jake their customs even though everyone is against it. There are a lot of things like how to hunt and fly. Jake becomes good at it and an official part of the tribe. Jake isn't actually Na'vi so the problem is that the two fall in love. He has a Na'vi body.
Grace learns a lot more about the Na'vi than any other person. She believes that the Na'vi diety, Eywa, is a representation of what she believes to be a living organisms. The Na'vi attempt to pass Grace's consciousness through Eywa to save her life when she is injured in a fight. Grace claims she can see Eywa but it doesn't work. Grace is no longer with us.
Jake tells Quaritch that the Na'vi will never leave their home, but he uses intel Jake gave him. The Omaticayas home was destroyed and the head of the clan was killed. Jake is seen as a traitor by the Na'vi and becomes an ostracized person after many twists and turns. He needs to prove to the Na'vi that he is worthy.
Jake bonds with the largest and most feared animal in the area and becomes a legend among the Na'vi people. The move shows how much he loves the Na'vi and how he can unite the local tribes to fight against the RDA.
The Sky People were defeated by the Na'vi with the help of all the tribes and the creatures of Pandora.
Most of the humans are sent back to Earth after the Na'vi victory. They worked with Grace and are considered friends of the Na'vi. Jake became an official Na'vi when most of the humans went or died.
You have it, so there you have it. Jake and princess Neytiri are the leaders of the Na'vi. All seems well until it isn't. The Way of Water is currently in theaters.
