  • Puerto Rico voters will be able to choose independence, statehood, or free association under a bill approved by the House.

All but 16 House Republicans voted against the Puerto Rico Status Act, which was passed by the House on Thursday. The Democrats voted for the bill.

The vote was presided over by a New York Democrat who is of Puerto Rican descent.

The bill would allow voters in Puerto Rico to choose between statehood, independence, or a compact of free association with the US in a November referendum.

The addition of the bill to the calendar this week was a surprise. The legislation was co-sponsored by a number of Republicans.

The territory's Republican Resident Commissioner, who is a non-voting representative for the island in Congress, supported it.

The bill is not likely to pass the Senate because of the number of Republican supporters.

A number of reasons for opposing the bill, including a lack of debate and the possibility of statehood, were cited by House Republicans on Thursday.

Roy told Insider that he's not interested in going down that road at the moment. I haven't been involved in any of the debates about it. They are trying to finish this before Christmas.

The bill was not the right way to go about it, according to the Georgia Republican.

She doesn't think people living in Puerto Rico should be able to vote on the issue.
