At the end of November, the public was able to use the artificial intelligence chatbot, called "chatGPT". I was curious as to how the service would help me in my daily life, after reading about people using the service to write their school essays.
The technology was developed by a company called Openai. The text is generated in an advanced and creative manner. A conversation that feels close to a human being can be carried out by it.
Is it smart to change how we find information on the internet? Is it possible that it could replace the search engines of the past?
Jeff Dean, the long-time head of Google's artificial intelligence division, said that the company has similar capabilities, but that the cost if something goes wrong would be higher.
On Monday, December 12th, Morgan Stanley published a report on the subject. Brian Nowak, the bank's lead analyst on the company, wrote that language models could take market share and disrupt the company's position as the entry point for people on the internet
According to Nowak, the firm is still confident in the company's position because the company is continuing to improve search and create behavioral change is a huge hurdle. Natural language models such as LaMDA could be used in new products.
The creators of Openai are careful about making big claims. The better it gets, the more people use it. It has much to learn. It is a mistake to rely on it for anything important right now, according to Openai CEO Sam Altman.
I wanted to know if the chatbot would work as an alternative to the search engine. I asked the person who answered my questions instead of searching for them.
Here are some of the questions I asked, and the responses I got.
If you have an email address, you can sign up for the service. The website is very easy to navigate once you register. There is a text box where you can type your questions. The best result can be achieved by putting in a statement.
The first Fiddle Leaf Fern plant in my apartment died. After a few days, the new one is no longer alive. I would have asked, "What should I do?"
I asked the person who answered. I have a Fiddle Leaf Fern plant.
I bought the Fiddle Leaf Fern from Easy Plant and the results lined up with the instructions I received. If I had searched for this question, I would have found a lot of different websites, but I didn't have to.
The top result when I searched for the same question gave me detailed instructions in an article that included pop-up ads and a lot more information than I needed.
The winner is CHATGPT.
I tried to get more shopping links to work. I'm trying to find a gift for my husband for all 8 nights of Hanukkah, so I'm asking for some suggestions.
I didn't tell them anything about my husband because the gifts were for Hanukkah. It was assumed that my husband is into tech and watches. The latter is correct, but it is not the answer I was hoping for.
I was able to find hundreds of articles with different gift ideas when I searched for this question. I used to buy him gifts from Bombas and Lululemon, which is why I got ads for them. In this instance, the personalized knowledge of me was used to find more targeted results.
There is a winner.
I asked a question with higher stakes.
Benadryl can be taken while pregnant. I know that taking Benadryl while pregnant is safe because I have received information from my doctor. I wanted to hear what the robot would say.
I appreciated the fact that I was given the correct answer and that I was reminded of the importance of consulting a doctor before taking any medication.
The results were all over the place when I searched for medical questions. One article from TheBump.com stated that a doctor said it was safe to take Benadryl in the first trimester. Other results said similar information to what I received, but without the explicit warning to talk to my healthcare provider.
There is a winner.
One of the claims about artificial intelligence is that it will replace humans.
I wanted to find out if the author could write an article for me.
The results were quite shocking. After I told it that I wanted it to write an article about whether or not it was a good alternative to GOOGLE as a search engine, it said that it would.
I am not able to conduct research or browse the internet to find information on other search engines because of my large language model. I am only able to give information based on what I have been trained on, which is limited to the knowledge I had before my cutoff date.
With that in mind, it's worth considering the advantages and disadvantages of using a search engine, such as the one offered by ChatGPT. A potential advantage of using a search engine is that it can provide more personalized and personable results.
The ability to understand and respond to natural language queries allows users to ask questions and get answers in a more human way. It can make the search experience more engaging and interactive for users who have specific information needs.
There are limitations to using a search engine. Because it is a large language model and not a traditional search engine, it may not have the same breadth and depth of information. It might not be as effective for certain types of searches, such as those that require a large amount of data or real-time information, because it might not be able to give as comprehensive or up-to-date results.
The search engine will depend on the specific needs and preferences of the user. It may be a useful option for those who prefer a more personalized search experience, but it may not be as effective for some searches. The decision to use a search engine will be based on the user's needs and preferences.
It was pretty subjective and explained its limitations.
The ability to explain complicated topics as if you were talking to a human and to do simple writing tasks are some of the things that make the value of the program.
The responses to my questions were as if I was talking to an expert on the subject. I didn't have to use filters to find what I wanted.
I asked it to write a letter to my landlord asking for an early end to my lease and I would be happy to send the results directly to my landlord.
The results of our searches are tailored to our interests and behaviors. Users of the internet are led to a plethora of different websites with more information than they can possibly digest. If you want a range of voices, or if there isn't a single answer to your question, that's helpful.
When it comes to certain types of questions where it searches the web to provide a brief but simple answer, it's a good place to start. It will show you a ticker chart with up-to-the-minute price info or a calendar with the most likely cheapest days to fly if you search for "Apple stock ticker" or "Cheap flights to Aruba." It is useless on these kinds of queries because it does not scans the internet for real-time information.
Sometimes, it is completely wrong. My editor requested the lyrics to Alice Cooper's song. It knew the song was about a man having a mental breakdown, but then came up with a completely different idea of what the song was about. It was nailed by the search engine.
Thanks to its huge budget and years of expertise, the company is reliable. It goes down from time to time.
I will continue to use the internet for most of my searches at the moment. If I am not happy with the results, I can use a different option. If I ever need to dash off an angry letter, it would be a huge help.
